Nursing stars shine at 8th annual awards

On April 28, the Sagamore Ballroom at the Indiana Convention Center was a gathering place for people from across central Indiana to recognize and celebrate nurses and nursing.
The Indianapolis Star’s eighth annual Salute to Nurses awards luncheon drew more than 700 attendees. Many were nurses, some were from health care management and others comprise the support network of friends and family who help nurses perform miracles every day.

New ideas
This year’s Salute to Nurses included much of the excitement of years past, as well as a few surprises. Carrie Bernhardt, advertising and events supervisor for The Star, explained the new Nurse of the Year selection process.

“Last year, there were six finalists for Nurse of the Year. Five won specific awards, and one received the Nurse of the Year award,” Bernhardt said. “This year, there are five award winners. Each knew which award they won before the event. The surprise was which of the award winners also was the Nurse of the Year.”

The five award categories were Lifetime of Compassion, Community Outreach, Nurse Educator, Inspiration and Advancement of Nursing. Three nurses also received honorable mention.

Choosing award recipients was no easy task. According to Bernhardt, the overwhelming number of nominations and the compelling stories they told made the job even more challenging.

“Nearly 1,000 nominations were submitted for this year’s Nurse of the Year award,” she said. “These letters recognized the contributions and dedication of 773 outstanding nurses throughout the state of Indiana.”
