Area colleges boost nursing programs to offset shortage
Monday, February 08, 2010
The nation’s nursing shortage is expected to become more acute once the economy picks up, and local nursing programs are expanding in an attempt to buck that trend.
“The need is growing, and part of that is because of the age of the nursing profession,” said Julie Leutschwager, associate professor of nursing and program chairwoman at Rockford College.
Within the next 10 years, 32 percent of the nursing force will be eligible for retirement. That number is at 34 percent in this region, she said.
