UAB Establishes Alice L. McCallum Endowed Nursing Scholarship
Tuesday, February 09, 2010
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing has established the Alice L. McCallum Endowed Nursing Scholarship, an action that was approved by the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees at its Feb. 5 meeting.
The scholarship is in memory of Alice L. McCallum. Alice McCallum was an Alabama native and earned her nursing degree from the Jefferson-Hillman Hospital School of Nursing, which later became known as the University Hospital School of Nursing. She also was an alumnus of the UAB School of Nursing, as alumni of the nursing programs that originated on UAB’s campus were adopted into the UAB School of Nursing after the other programs closed.

UAB School of Nursing turns 60
Thursday, January 21, 2010
As UAB’s School of Nursing begins a year-long celebration of its 60th anniversary, the crucial roles of nurses and nursing education have never been greater.
The demand for long-term care is increasing as the U.S. population ages.
Patients who are discharged from hospitals need a continuum of care as they move to their homes or to a long-term care facility. Failure to provide that care means that 30 percent of Medicare patients who were hospitalized for a medical condition are back in the hospital within 60 days, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine last year—a potentially preventable problem that costs up to $12 billion a year.
