UAB Establishes Alice L. McCallum Endowed Nursing Scholarship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing has established the Alice L. McCallum Endowed Nursing Scholarship, an action that was approved by the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees at its Feb. 5 meeting.

The scholarship is in memory of Alice L. McCallum. Alice McCallum was an Alabama native and earned her nursing degree from the Jefferson-Hillman Hospital School of Nursing, which later became known as the University Hospital School of Nursing. She also was an alumnus of the UAB School of Nursing, as alumni of the nursing programs that originated on UAB’s campus were adopted into the UAB School of Nursing after the other programs closed.

UAB School of Nursing turns 60

As UAB’s School of Nursing begins a year-long celebration of its 60th anniversary, the crucial roles of nurses and nursing education have never been greater.

The demand for long-term care is increasing as the U.S. population ages.

Patients who are discharged from hospitals need a continuum of care as they move to their homes or to a long-term care facility. Failure to provide that care means that 30 percent of Medicare patients who were hospitalized for a medical condition are back in the hospital within 60 days, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine last year—a potentially preventable problem that costs up to $12 billion a year.

One nurse’s story

Patty Galloway has been by the side of mothers as young as 12. Some live in poverty and have no contact with their children’s fathers. Some have limited family support, while others have no support at all.

A year ago, Galloway was among the first nurses hired for the Nurse-Family Partnership, part of the Gift of Life Foundation. It’s a local program that reaches out to low-income, first-time mothers to help ensure the health and future success of both mother and child.

When Galloway heard about the opportunity last November, when the program was just getting started, she thought to herself, “Man! This is my dream job,” she said. “I love the one-on-one teaching, getting to know your client, becoming part of their world.”
