High school Med Prep classes train next generation of medical workers

Without realizing it, local high school students in Medical Prep I were having a fine time learning about health care during class recently.

In a Jeopardy-style game, students in groups raced Friday to be the first to slap bells and shout the answers.

Juniors and seniors from the valley’s seven high schools are encouraged to apply for the class that meets at Western Colorado Community College. The courses whet students’ appetites for careers in health care by offering a broad introduction to the field. Courses also offer career-starter certifications, and students can earn three credits from Mesa State College. The classes have been offered for about 10 years, but this is the first year the class has been expanded to Medical Prep II.

Families, employees urge Ritter to nix plan that would close center

More than 100 people Tuesday urged Gov. Bill Ritter to spare the Grand Junction Regional Center’s skilled-nursing facility or at least call a special legislative session to examine other choices.

One of them, a veteran of a previous budget-cutting effort, said families, staff members and clients are in for a long fight.

“The handwriting is on the wall,” said Tony Peña, a staff member at the center and the brother of a woman who has lived there for 43 years.

Tele-health clinics roll into Colorado

The nurse waves a digital video camera across the pink, bumpy sore on the patient’s shin, and the doctor nearly 1,000 miles away in Minnetonka, Minn., asks how she fell.

Then he gives her an e-prescription for an antibiotic, asks her about her diabetes and tells her to come see him again — virtually, via satellite — in three days.

Skilled Nursing Facility To Open In Lakewood

Construction is underway in Lakewood on a senior living home, which is being designed to have a neighborhood feel, rather than a single structure with long hallways.
Arbor Living Center will open at 7495 W Eastman Place, which will be a skilled nursing facility, scheduled for completion in summer 2010, said Tim Heronimus, of Arbor Living.
“The residences will feature a non-traditional, non-institutional design allowing for residential neighborhoods, which will be unique to any skilled nursing centers in the region,” Heronimus said.
Although seniors will be able to live at Arbor if they choose, the facility will feature a short-term rehabilitation clinic for those who have suffered such conditions as a stroke, he said.

Now Opt for an Associate Degree in Nursing (RN) at CollegeAmerica, Denver

Denver, CO, June 29, 2009 – CollegeAmerica has recently added an Associate Degree in Nursing (RN) at their Denver campus for students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare.

The two-year Associate Degree is often treated as a stepping stone to a BSN. It focuses more on technical skills and allows a student to become a Registered Nurse (RN). Now, for the first time at CollegeAmerica, those aspiring to become a RN can complete the pre-requisite to achieving that dream in only 15 months (after pre-requisite courses).
