Backus Hospital takes steps to eliminate the need to send patients elsewhere

The William W. Backus Hospital is hiring temporary nurses, has expanded patient capacity with an overflow unit of 12 beds with added staffing, and plans to create a second new area to deal with high patient volumes and avoid the need to send patients to other hospitals.

UConn brings nursing program to Avery Point

Starting this semester, the University of Connecticut is offering its Master’s Entry Into Nursing program at its Avery Point campus, which this morning is scheduled to open a state-of-the-art lab space where students can diagnose simulated patients.

Union Authorizes A Strike Against Red Cross In Central Connecticut

After a year of unsuccessful negotiations, the majority of unionized Red Cross workers in central Connecticut voted Sunday night to authorize a strike.
The phlebotomists, licensed practical nurses, nurses, drivers and lab technicians are represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, and they have been working without a contract for a year.

Nominations sought for nursing awards

The Ridgefield Visiting Nurse Association will serve as this year’s regional host for the 10th anniversary of the Nightingale Awards for Excellence in Nursing on Tuesday, May 11, at the Italian Center of Stamford.
Over the past nine years the award has been given to more than 900 nurses throughout Fairfield County. Nomination forms are available online at nightingalenursingawards.org/fairfield, with nominations due by Friday, March 5.
