New Program Helps Address Delaware Nursing Shortage

Delaware is facing a nursing shortage. The government estimates the state needs between 1,300 and 3,000 additional nurses. A new program at Dover High School may help close that gap.

The school has started a nursing program. After completing the course, students can take the state test to become a nursing assistant. With nurses in high demand. the program will benefit not only students, but the community as well, the school said.

Delaware Tech Dedicates New Nursing Lab

Delaware Technical & Community College’s Terry Campus has dedicated its nursing laboratory in honor of Bayhealth Medical Center, Dover, Del.

The Bayhealth Medical Center Nursing Science Laboratory will serve as a training ground for the next generation of Delaware’s nurses.

“Bayhealth has been here for us since we started our nursing program during the 1970s,” said Delaware Tech Nursing Chair JoAnn Baker, RN, MSN. “Bayhealth is not only supporting Delaware Tech and its nursing students but is also supporting the entire community by ensuring nursing professionals are available to serve us for another generation.”

Delaware Valley Hospital Honors Nurses for Academic Achievements

As part of their annual National Nurses’ Week celebration, May 6 - 12, Delaware Valley Hospital recognizes two nurses who committed themselves to go beyond their RN training and achieved their BSN. Barbara MacDonald and Maja Kryzton, both 5-year employees, graduated from the SUNY Delhi RN-BSN program in January of this year, after two years of study.

Extern program gives student nurses real-life experiences

Sixteen nursing students from college and university nursing programs across the East Coast, as well as from the Beebe School of Nursing, recently completed an eight-week nurse extern program at Beebe Medical Center.

The program gives nursing students the opportunity to have real-life experience in several different hospital areas including the Emergency Department, outpatient surgery and medical surgical units, Critical Care Unit, Cardiovascular Step-down Unit and Tunnell Cancer Center.

States get help digitizing med records

Vice President Joe Biden announced Thursday that about $1.2 billion in federal stimulus funding will be used to help states and health care institutions adopt electronic medical record keeping.

Delaware, viewed nationally as a leader in the move to digitized health records, will be eligible for millions of dollars through grants under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The exact amount has yet to be set.

Biden made the health-records announcement at a Chicago hospital during an appearance with Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Medicare proposal would hit hospitals

The U.S. Senate has drafted a policy to withhold 20 percent of a hospital’s reimbursement for several still-unspecified procedures when Medicare patients are readmitted within 30 days for a condition related to their initial hospitalization.

The Senate Finance Committee’s policy is seen as a major step in overhauling Medicare, the federal health program that insures nearly 45 million people who are over 65 or disabled.

The policy aims to reduce readmissions for such things as infections a patient acquired while hospitalized or a patient being discharged without proper medical instructions. Such readmissions amount to a major expense for Medicare.
