Florida facilities implement plan to treat ED pain patients

Laws targeting the state’s pain clinics have resulted in more people turning to EDs for pain medication, including those abusing prescription drugs, according to an article in the Orlando Sentinel.
ED physicians and nurses are facing aggressive pill-seekers, who become threatening if they do not receive the drugs they want, according to the article. In response to this new wave of patients, Orlando Health and Florida Hospital officials announced they are implementing a chronic pain management plan to help ED staff better deal with the influx of people seeking pain treatment.
“We certainly support the additional policing of illegal use of prescription pain medication, but realized it was time for us to make some changes in how we handle the situation in our emergency department,” said David Goldman, DO, a Florida Hospital emergency room physician, in the article.
The new plan calls for physicians to help educate patients about the dangers of abusing prescription drugs and addiction and to refer patients to a primary care physician for long-term treatment. The plan also calls for physicians to refer patients to community resources such as rehabilitation facilities, if they need help for prescription-drug addiction.
About seven people die each day in Florida because of prescription-drug overdoses, according to the article. New state laws ban most doctors from selling pain medications out of their offices, and many local governments have placed moratoriums on new pain management clinics.
According to law enforcement officials, many rogue doctors operate out of pain clinics, where people can get large quantities of pain medications and sedatives with little to no medical evaluation or true need for the drugs.

Calling All Applicants: Florida Nurses Foundation Offers Scholarships & Grants

For nursing students who take the financial leap of faith often required to pursue education, the Florida Nurses Foundation is offering a chance to grab a monetary buoy to stay afloat. This year the FNF will award more than $20,000 in scholarships and research grants to nursing students and researchers.
To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants must be enrolled in a nationally accredited nursing program. Applicants are asked to submit two short essays describing their financial need and potential contribution to nursing and society as a future nurse. In addition, applicants will be required to submit two letters of reference and a transcript.

As the impact of Florida Governor Rick Scott’s Medicaid proposals are a hot topic of debate in the health policy community, a new analysis detailing the significance of Florida’s skilled nursing sector to the state’s economic activity finds this key local employer generates $11.63 billion annually and helps support 145,114 local jobs statewide. This ranks Florida as fifth nationally in terms of nursing facility-generated economic activity, and makes the skilled nursing sector Florida’s second largest health facility employer after hospitals.

Fla. adds 64 new nursing programs in 18 months

Florida has added 64 new nursing education programs of all types in the 18 months since a new law went into effect easing the approval process.
A legislative report Friday said the Board of Nursing approved programs at triple the rate for the previous 18 months.
The Legislature revised the process in response to a nursing shortage.
The Office of Program Policy Analysis & Government Accountability reported the new programs have increased student seats by 20 percent and enrollment by 13 percent. It’s too early, though, to tell now the changes have affected graduation and retention rates or employment outcomes.

“This is so easy; it’s just bam! bam! bam!,” said Bradley, 30, a licensed practical nurse from Cape Coral.
Ten home health companies put their competitive instincts aside to recruit nurses and caregivers at a career fair at the Southwest Florida Works office in Fort Myers.
More than 100 health care workers attended looking for opportunities to work.
