Hawaii’s nursing shortage turns to surplus - but not for long

For years, we’ve been hearing about a critical nursing shortage in Hawaii. But recently, the prognosis has changed. Now, the state is actually seeing a surplus of nurses.
The quick turn-around took some in the healthcare industry by surprise. It’s good for patients, but if you were hoping to easily land a job in the nursing profession right now, the timing couldn’t be worse.

Simulation lab helps students deal with multiple stresses of nursing

After battlefield medicine, the hospital room scenario at the University of Phoenix should have been a piece of cake for David Lee and Rob Morrison.
But the elderly “patient” in the high-tech Nursing Simulation Lab challenged even the experienced Army medics.
“They’re introducing stress on purpose,” said Lee, 25, a member of the Army Reserve and a former student at Kapiolani Community College.

Chaminade begins new nursing program this fall

The competition is fierce to get into one of Hawaii’s nursing schools.
But applicants now have another option.
Chaminade University has just received the thumbs up from the State Board of Nursing to begin its nursing program.
What was once the old Sullivan Library in Henry Hall will soon become the new home for the Chaminade University Nursing Program.

Chaminade University Awaits Nursing School Approval

The Hawaii State Board of Nursing is expected to issue final approval Thursday for a new school of nursing at Chaminade University.
The nursing school has been planned for four years.
Chaminade’s President Dr. Bernie Ploeger says a thousand nursing school applicants are turned away each year in Hawaii because there is no room in existing nursing programs.

The Hawai’i Nurses’ Association Announces Affiliation with the Office and Professional Employees

The Hawai’i Nurses’ Association (HNA) announced its affiliation with the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU), AFL-CIO. “Our affiliation with OPEIU is a landmark decision for us and signals our intention to take our place in organized labor,” said HNA President Joan Craft, RN.
HNA recently withdrew from the United American Nurses (UAN), which was dissolved following a contentious internal dispute within UAN Affiliates in 2009. The HNA Board of Directors took action to dis-affiliate with UAN prior to its alleged merging with California Nurses Association (CNA)/National Nurses Organizing Committee (NNOC) in the fall of 2009. The newly formed group, “National Nurses United” (NNU) was founded in December 2009.

Healthcare industry, UH Manoa create Hawaii Nursing Simulation Center

In the spirit of the season, four of Hawai’i’s healthcare industry leaders joined officials and students at UH Mānoa’s School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene (SONDH) today to celebrate $1,050,000 in initial gifts to support the development of the Hawai’i Nursing Simulation Center at Webster Hall.
At this celebration, healthcare leaders presented a check totaling $1.05 million, representing their four recent gifts made in support of the planned simulation center.
Hawai’i Medical Service Association (HMSA) Foundation made a $500,000 gift; Hawai’i Pacific Health contributed $250,000; Kaiser Permanente Hawai’i contributed

Hawaii Island Family Heath Center opens in Hilo

A first-of-its kind medical clinic and training center for health professionals celebrated its grand opening in Hilo on Saturday (Oct 24).
The Hawai‘i Island Family Health Center is the culmination of several years of effort by island residents and federal, state, and local governments to address a critical shortage in health professionals available to the Big Island’s citizens.

Walmart grant helps Red Cross train unemployed as nurse aides

Walmart has awarded the Hawaii State Chapter of the American Red Cross with a $25,000 grant to provide unemployed individuals statewide with scholarships for the Red Cross Nurse Aide Training Program and learn the knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality health care as a certified nurse aide (CNA).
Coralie Chun Matayoshi, Chief Executive Officer of the Hawaii State Chapter, said, “Through Walmart’s generosity, a number of unemployed individuals in Hawaii will be given a chance to learn a skill through our Red Cross Nurse Aide Training Program that will not only lead to employment opportunities, but will also provide them with a life-long skill to care for family, friends and neighbors as they grow older and need assistance. With caregiving skills, more individuals are likely to respond when emergencies or other situations occur that need medical knowledge or assistance. They will be prepared to save the lives of others through their work in hospitals, nursing homes and private home environments.”

Honoring U. S. Nurse Cadet Corps with scholarship

HONOLULU - The University of Hawaiʻi Foundation and School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene at UH Mānoa have announced the creation of an endowed nursing scholarship, The Claire B. and Mark L. Litchman Endowed Scholarship in Nursing in Honor of the U.S. Nurse Cadet Corps of World War II.
By creating a $35,000 endowment and a $2,000 expendable account to fund the scholarship, the donors are helping increase the number of nurses in Hawaiʻi and showing their support of the nursing profession. Part-time Hawaiʻi residents, Claire and Mark Litchman have a special history with the U.S. Nurse Cadet Corps as Claire served in the U.S. Nurse Cadet Corps in World War II.

Chaminade names new nursing associate dean

Chaminade University has named Stephanie Genz its new associate dean for nursing.
Genz starts immediately at the Catholic Marianist university in Honolulu, which plans to open its new School of Nursing in the fall of 2010.
Chaminade is waiting on approval by the Hawaii State Board of Nursing for its program, which it’s launching to meet the critical nursing shortage statewide.
