Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart sponsored Franciscan Sisters Health Care Corporation, Frankfort, Ill. Servants of the Holy Heart of Mary, Holy Family Province, USA sponsored ServantCor, Kankakee, Ill. Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, Regional Community of Chicago sponsored, among others, Mercy Center for Health Care Services, McAuley Manor and Fox Knoll, all of Aurora, Ill. Provena Health is governed by a board of directors which draws both from the sponsoring congregations and the community. Management activities are carried out primarily by lay professionals.

Street nurses bring care to city’s darkest corners

Almost every evening, nurse practitioner Barbara Sexton boards the Night Ministry’s bus to provide blood tests, Hepatitis A and B immunizations, flu shots and condoms to homeless people, sex workers and drug users.

Nurse Rosanna Jackson, president of the nonprofit Gift House, regularly cruises the streets of North Lawndale, Austin and Little Village in a van to provide needle exchange, test for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, and counsel drug abusers.

“Without this kind of care, people would just go on relying on emergency rooms, which are already overburdened.” Sexton said. “Our focus is to give people early treatment so they can avoid having to go.”

St. Francis Nursing Program Awarded Grant for DNP

The University of St. Francis (Joliet, Ill.) College of Nursing and Allied Health recently received a grant of more than $800,000 for its new Doctor of Nursing Practice program.

The Health Resources and Services Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, awarded the grant for funding of the DNP program for the next three years.

A booster for nursing careers

Looking to help the unemployed start new careers in nursing, an Evanston health-care company and two local colleges are offering a free nursing school education—and a job afterward.

The “Pay it Forward” program is being offered by Extended Care Clinical LLC, Wilbur Wright College in Chicago and Everest College in northwest Indiana.

It aims to help people who have lost a job due to the economy get back into the work force, while also filling nursing openings that are growing faster than they can be filled, said Kathy Brockman, Extended Care Clinical’s corporate executive recruiter.
