Nursing stars shine at 8th annual awards

On April 28, the Sagamore Ballroom at the Indiana Convention Center was a gathering place for people from across central Indiana to recognize and celebrate nurses and nursing.
The Indianapolis Star’s eighth annual Salute to Nurses awards luncheon drew more than 700 attendees. Many were nurses, some were from health care management and others comprise the support network of friends and family who help nurses perform miracles every day.

IU Kokomo, Tipton Hospital team up for baccalaureate nursing program

Indiana University Kokomo’s School of Nursing and Tipton Hospital are partnering this fall to offer off-site instruction for registered nurses (R.N.) looking to upgrade their credentials.
The R.N. to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) cohort will begin in August, and will provide the opportunity for R.N.’s in the Tipton area to complete their degree closer to home. This program is offered as an alternative to attending classes on campus.

Nurse practitioners take on increasing health care load

Carla Robbins of Lafayette recently visited the Riggs Community Health Center for a follow-up visit.
But instead of being treated by a physician, Robbins was seen by a nurse practitioner.
“She has met my needs,” said 58-year-old Robbins, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and high cholesterol.

Would-be nurses outgrow class space

ANDERSON, Ind. — A nursing shortage across Indiana and the nation isn’t likely to ease anytime soon, but it isn’t for lack of people who want the training.
“It’s extremely competitive,” said Susan Nelson, chairwoman of Ivy Tech Community College’s regional nursing department. That includes nursing programs at campuses in Anderson, Marion, Muncie and New Castle.

Prof picked to lead state nursing association

University of Indianapolis faculty member Barbara B. Kelly has been named president of the Board of Directors for the Indiana State Nurses Association.
An assistant professor in UIndy’s School of Nursing, Kelly was elected to a two-year term at the association’s annual member meeting in October.
