Community Health Centers - Iowa’s Best Kept Secret?
Thursday, July 30, 2009
DES MOINES, Iowa - The second week in August is “National Health Center Week,” recognizing the contributions of community health centers. Iowa has 13 such centers, that provided affordable health care to more than 140,000 in the last year. Tori Squires, senior program director for the Iowa/Nebraska Primary Care Association, says many people may not know these facilities’ services are available, on a sliding fee basis, to the uninsured or underinsured.
“There is indeed affordable, quality health care out there for those who may not have the resources to pay for it, or may not have insurance, or don’t have adequate insurance for primary and preventive services.”

Nursing graduates find tighter job market
Monday, July 06, 2009
New nursing school graduates are having an unusually tough time finding jobs after years of efforts to recruit people to the profession.
Experts continue to warn of a looming shortage of nurses in Iowa and across the nation. And some nursing schools are touting the profession as a safe alternative for workers who have been laid off from other careers.
But for the moment, at least, nursing jobs - like jobs in dozens of other fields - are relatively scarce.

Visiting Nurses has supported Burlington for 100 years
Monday, June 22, 2009
Marian Brunken remembers the days when Medicare didn’t exist.
When she started her career as a nurse with the Visiting Nurses Association of Burlington in 1958, completing extensive paperwork for patients was not part of her daily duties.
“We had no charts. We just went and made our visit,” said Brunken, 87, who worked for the non-profit home health care agency for 41 years before retiring in 1999. “That’s why we could make so many calls in the day.”

Solutions to nursing shortage involve a slow process
Thursday, June 04, 2009
Vickie Barth has been a teacher for 18 of her 40 years in nursing. She’s also been a staff nurse, nurse manager and house supervisor and has had a clinical focus in emergency department nursing. For the past two years, she’s worked as director of nursing education for Des Moines Area Community College, overseeing the program at the Ankeny, Urban, Boone, Carroll and Newton campuses.
As Iowa and the rest of the nation face a shortage of nurses, Barth pitches the profession as a versatile career with limitless opportunities - and she sees the number of nursing graduates at DMACC increasing. But, she explains, there are obstacles to overcome in the training of nursing students.

IA Groups Attacking the Looming Nursing Shortage
Wednesday, May 13, 2009
Des Moines, IA – As the Baby Boomers age, more nurses will be retiring. At the same time, more Iowans will need health care services provided by nurses. The coming nursing shortage has alarmed a coalition of health, labor and government groups, and they are banding together to find a solution.
One of those groups is Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa. The organization’s chief public affairs officer, Julie Stauch, says nurses are really health instructors who provide a tremendous service to health-care providers like Planned Parenthood.
