Nursing Restriction Called Unconstitutional

NEW ORLEANS (CN) - Despite a nationwide shortage of 126,000 nurses that has hospitals and states recruiting nurses overseas, Louisiana has barred noncitizens from being licensed as practical nurses there - a restriction that a South African nurse, already licensed in Texas, challenges as unconstitutional.

Loyola’s School of Nursing to offer state’s first Doctor of Nursing Practice program

Since the initial enrollment of nursing students at Loyola University New Orleans in 1979, the School of Nursing has mounted innovative programs in nursing, keeping pace with dramatic changes in nursing education. That tradition of excellence continues with the transition of its curriculum for nurse practitioners from the master’s level to the doctoral level. Loyola is positioned to be the first university in Louisiana and among the first 90 in the country to offer the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program.

Health Care Debate Rages Across Louisiana

A face-off reminiscent of the famed Lincoln-Douglas debates has drawn crowds at cities across Louisiana this week, and promises to draw more attention as it comes to the Southern part of the state this weekend.
A Republican versus a Democrat, both critically interested in major health care reform, have jointly addressed forums across the state taking their message that the system is broken, but the President and his advisors need to be careful about how the fix the system. Each presents a series of ideas, and then asks the assembled public for their input to take back to Louisiana’s Congressional leadership.

Secretary says new VA hospital may break ground within a year

NEW ORLEANS – The nation’s top veterans affairs chief said on Monday the new VA Hospital is closer to reality than some people might think.
That’s despite the numerous delays and state struggles over who will control the adjoining replacement for Charity Hospital.
Eric Shinseki, the U.S. secretary of Veterans Affairs, spoke to Eyewitness News exclusively about the future of the massive downtown project.

Delta to offer nursing program

After years of planning, Louisiana Delta Community College will launch its nursing program next spring.
Delta announced Tuesday that is has received state approval to accept students into nursing courses.
According to nursing chair Bonnie Johnson, who comes to Delta after 25 years at Louisiana State University-Eunice, the new program will help fill a nursing shortage.
“There are still job openings,” Johnson said. “And there’s been projected increasing need through 2020.”

Louisiana Healthcare Conscience Protection Law Passes State Lawmakers

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana, June 26, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Louisiana lawmakers Wednesday approved a law affirming the conscience rights of both private and public healthcare workers in the state who object to performing abortion or physician-assisted suicide, or administering abortifacient drugs.
The Healthcare Workers Conscience Act (HB-517) won approval in the Senate with a 31-2 vote, and the House 88-12.
“Any person has the right not to participate in, and no person shall be required to participate in any health care service that violates his conscience to the extent that patient access to health care is not compromised,” states the bill in part.

Examiner team needs more nurses

LAFAYETTE — There are two sexual assault nurse examiners on call in Lafayette emergency rooms to recover the evidence that assists with police investigations.
Two more will soon complete the training required to join the examiner team and the program is seeking more applicants.
Another training session will begin June 8-12, and registered nurses with at least three years of experience who are interested in the program have until Friday to apply.
