Oldest nurse in Maine honored
Tuesday, November 17, 2009
Major Eva M. Price, 100, is Maine’s oldest living nurse. She was honored by Janet Michaud, the VFW Women’s Commander, for her long years of service as an army nurse. The ceremony was held on Veteran’s eve at the University Hall of the University College of Bangor.
Price had one of the longest stints as a nurse, beginning from the World War II. She was born in 1909 in Brewer. Women of those days did not have many career options and often became a nurse. Price too, had registered herself as a nurse with the U.S. Army. She was an example that numerous women followed for generations later. In her long 20 years nursing career, Price has served soldiers who were wounded in Philippines. Later she went on to nurse soldiers wounded in the atomic catastrophe in Hiroshima. After the World War, Price served as a nurse in Korea and Germany. In the last five years as a nurse, she was at the Walter Reed Army Medical Centre in Washington D.C.

Nurses Push For Health Care Reform In Portland
Monday, October 12, 2009
PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER)—The issue of healthcare reform brought nurses out to the West End of Portland Saturday.
The nurses were making house calls to encourage people to call or write their congressional delegation so they’ll support a healthcare reform bill. Many of those lobbying door to door said they believe a public health insurance option is necessary to lower costs, improve care and keep insurance companies honest.
The nurses said too many patients avoid going to the doctor because their insurance company won’t cover the treatment they need.

Health Plans Utilize SironaHealth’s Nurse Advice Line Programs
Friday, August 28, 2009
South Portland, ME (PRWEB) August 28, 2009—Many health insurers are searching for strategies to reduce the costs associated with non-urgent, and often avoidable, Emergency Room visits that occur each year in the United States--which some estimates put over $20 billion dollars annually.
Regardless of whether they’re experiencing an emergency, many consumers will choose the ER as their initial source for healthcare. This is especially common with parents who are unsure if their child should see a doctor after-hours and opt to visit the ER for minor ailments. During these visits, hospitals are forced to allocate expensive resources to treat non-emergent patients, which can cost many times greater than if they were treated through primary or home care.

PORTLAND, Maine—Family health care premiums grew more than seven times faster than income in Connecticut and more than four times faster than income in Maine over the past decade, according to a study released Wednesday.
In Maine, health insurance premiums rose by 101 percent compared to a 22 percent increase for median income from 2000 to 2009; in Connecticut, premiums grew 96 percent compared to a 13 percent gain in wages over the same period, Families USA group said.
Health care costs have continued to outpace income even as employers scale back health plans and employees pay higher deductibles and co-payments, the group said.
