MORE MEN MOVE TO NURSING CAREERS

Brian Medley, a nurse at Lurie Children’s Hospital, and Zain Rehman, a nurse at Advocate Christ Medical Center Intensive Care Unit, talked about their career path.

Nursing has historically been a female-dominated field, but men are increasingly pursuing the career. The percentage of men in nursing is still small, only about 9 percent to 10 percent,

A nursing career holds many advantages for men, such as highly diverse patient care environments, career stability, and a competitive salary.

Resurrection University will host a “Thinking Out Loud” speaker series for men, by men.

“Men in Nursing” is a free event that brings together a panel of male nursing professionals to talk about what it’s like to be a nurse in today’s healthcare environment

Detroit Ranks #8 in Skilled Nursing Facility Economic Activity, Job Creation

(at the bottom of this article is a link to the full report)

A new Avalere Health LLC analysis released today detailing the annual economic and jobs output of skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) in the nation’s 50 most populous Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) finds the Detroit/Warren/Livonia ranks eighth nationally. This fact underscores the Detroit metro area’s importance to the entire state in terms of seniors’ health care and its related employment base, said the Washington DC-based Alliance for Quality Nursing Home Care, which released the independent analysis. In addition, the study spotlights the critical need to sustain strong federal Medicare funding from Washington in the face of a fragile state Medicaid system administered in Lansing, the Alliance said.

Nurses, students rally for patients

Hundreds of nurses and nursing students rallied on the Capitol last Wednesday in response to Governor Snyder’s proposed budget cuts.
“We cannot go on blindly ignoring what is happening to Michigan patients in our state,” said Michigan Nurses Association (MNA) President Jeff Breslin, RN. “The people we serve deserve better. Many of the cuts being proposed by our legislature will leave deep, bleeding wounds in our patients. Some cuts never heal.”
Nurses were presented with detailed information regarding both the national political landscape and the Michigan political environment during the day before the rally. During a panel discussion, nurses asked pointed questions about the shortage of nurses, short staffing, inferior supplies, patient satisfaction surveys and more.

AORN Announces Legislative Priorities for 2011

The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses, (AORN), with a membership base of 40,000 RNs and representing the interests of 140,000 perioperative Registered Nurses in the U.S., has announced it will target seven states in 2011 to enact RN as Circulator. The perioperative RN, through professional and patient-centered expertise, is the primary patient advocate in the operating room and is responsible for monitoring all aspects of the patient’s condition. The presence of the RN in the circulating role throughout each surgical procedure is essential for timely delivery of quality surgical care and optimal patient outcomes.
The seven targeted states, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia, were identified following an interview-based survey of hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers by the AORN Advocacy leaders. Many of these states indicated a strong desire to assure patient safety through the use of an RN circulator for each patient during each surgery.
