When Nick Heltemas needed medical help, he turned to St. Cloud Hospital.

The spry 72-year-old from St. Joseph often walks inside Crossroads Center for his health before the stores open, but he went to St. Cloud Hospital for a colonoscopy.

“I was treated good. They were prompt and took good care of me. They answer your questions,” said Heltemas, as he barely slowed down to take a turn during his morning walk on Thursday.

Technology brings world-class health to rural Minnesota

One common struggle in Minnesota — and in most states — has been finding a way to improve access to health care in rural areas. Although there is still a long way to go, the Minnesota Telehealth Network is offering a new answer to this problem.

The main troubles facing rural health care are no secret. The lack of physicians and health care facilities, coupled with high rural poverty rates has been a perpetual public policy nightmare. Unfortunately, rural citizens are still bearing this burden, and all-too-often find themselves driving long distances for lower quality services, or not receiving care at all. The situation is especially troublesome in cases of specialty care, with rural Minnesotans are often forced to visit the Twin Cities while paying for meals, gas, lodging, forgone wages, etc. This is where the Minnesota Telehealth Network comes in.

Nursing the revolution: Nurses are the linchpin of health-care reform

The police brought her in late at night, traumatized by the sexual assault she had just endured. But the woman had at least one piece of luck: Conducting the pelvic exam at Regions Hospital, St. Paul, was a forensic nurse who knew how to collect evidence.

Coaxing the details of the attack from the woman, the nurse learned that the assailant had used the victim’s cell phone. So she swabbed it for DNA. At the trial, that evidence helped convict the man.

The nurse was a colleague of Carolyn Garcia, an assistant professor of nursing at the University of Minnesota, who also works as a sexual assault nurse examiner at Regions. The story highlights the increasingly expansive roles nurses play in health care. With the U.S. population aging, chronic conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and type II diabetes on the rise, and primary care doctors often scarce, nurses are assuming greater responsibilities and leading the wave of health care reform.
