UNLV and UNR collaborate on new nursing program

Nursing graduates will have the opportunity to enroll in a new post-master’s degree program that can be taken via the Internet starting in fall 2010.
UNLV’s School of Nursing is collaborating with the University of Nevada, Reno to offer a Doctor of Nursing Practice program for post-graduates, offering classes to students all over the country.
“There is a national trend across the country for nurses who are in advanced practice to continue their education from a master’s degree to a doctoral level,” said Sarah Keating, professor at the Orvis School of Nursing at UNR.

Nursing education presentation at medical center

Nurses who are interested in increasing their levels of competency through education are invited to an informational presentation, 11 a.m. Oct. 20, in Carson Valley Medical Center’s administration building, conference room A.
Representatives from the University of Nevada, Reno, Orvis School of Nursing will present information on programs of interest to registered nurses including the RN to Bachelor of Science Nursing online program designed for working nurses, Master of Science programs including clinical nurse leader, family nurse practitioner, nurse educator and the proposed Doctor of Nursing Practice program.

Sponsored by the Nevada Cancer Institute and Siemens Foundation, six scholarships were awarded in June to Nevada nursing and bioengineering students.
From Reno to Las Vegas, students pursuing nursing and advanced degrees received a boost to their educational pursuits with the Siemens Oncology Scholarship. The Siemens Foundation, a global engineering company, collaborated with the Nevada Cancer Institute in Las Vegas to promote education in the health sciences in the Southwest.

Retired, inactive nurses sought by state board

In January, the Nevada State Board of Nursing enacted a new category of licensure—the Volunteer Nurse License, which waives the license fee for eligible retired or inactive nurses wishing to volunteer their services for an organized relief organization or within immunization centers or public health clinics.
In the event of a public health emergency, most licensed nurses will be required to report to their place of employment, but licensed volunteer nurses will be ready to serve during disasters or other times of need.
