Obama takes health plans to New Hampshire

He’s taking the fight for healthcare on the road, a fight over the issue that could define his presidency.

Survey: N.H. small businesses say health care reform a must

The fight for health care reform isn’t solely a political battle of speed and content in Washington, D.C. According to a recent survey of 200 small business owners in New Hampshire, more than 75 percent of responders said health care reform is important to getting the economy back on track.

The state-wide survey was one of 14 conducted throughout the country during the past two months by Small Business Majority, a non-partisan, national small business advocacy organization that focuses on health care reform. The survey concluded that health insurance affordability continues to be a major issue for small business owners, and controlling costs is a top priority. The 84 percent of small businesses in New Hampshire not offering health insurance to their employees say it is unaffordable, while 76 percent of those who do offer insurance are struggling to provide it.

Nurses ponder new role in prevention

NORTHFIELD – Nurses in rural areas say Vermont stands on the cusp of a health care revolution that could change the way small hospitals serve their patients and communities.

The focus on traditional care – procedures for treatment — is shifting to a new emphasis on prevention.

A panel of nurse executives from “critical access” hospitals in Vermont and New Hampshire met with students at Norwich University on Tuesday to discuss a coming “transformation” in the profession. Reforms afoot at both the federal and state levels, nurses said, will dramatically shift the role nurses and hospitals play in patient care.

Shaheen to pitch Medicare bill

As Congress and the president continue to negotiate the terms of a national health care reform plan, U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen plans to introduce a bill she says meets many of the shared goals of reformers in both parties.

The bill, which Shaheen is co-sponsoring in the Senate, would add a Medicare benefit to help patients make the transition from the hospital to home or a long-term care facility. The “Medicare Transitional Care Act” is expected to reach the Senate today.

New Hampshire Veterans Home celebrates National Nurses Week

TILTON - Although the New Hampshire Veterans Home celebrates its role as a long-term care facility all year round, the official recognition of National Nursing Home Week at NHVH began on Mother’s Day, May 10, and continues through Saturday. National Nursing Home Week was established by the American Health Care Association in 1967.

The theme of National Nursing Home Week, “Nurturing a Love that Lasts,” is meant to encourage everyone to think of generations of parents and grandparents as nurturers of future generations: to carry on life and family traditions. A supportive and caring environment, such as a nursing home, enables residents and families to continue growing, learning, and teaching through various ways. Nursing home staff, residents, and volunteers nurture a caring environment that values communication, relationships and partnership.
