MORE MEN MOVE TO NURSING CAREERS

Brian Medley, a nurse at Lurie Children’s Hospital, and Zain Rehman, a nurse at Advocate Christ Medical Center Intensive Care Unit, talked about their career path.

Nursing has historically been a female-dominated field, but men are increasingly pursuing the career. The percentage of men in nursing is still small, only about 9 percent to 10 percent,

A nursing career holds many advantages for men, such as highly diverse patient care environments, career stability, and a competitive salary.

Resurrection University will host a “Thinking Out Loud” speaker series for men, by men.

“Men in Nursing” is a free event that brings together a panel of male nursing professionals to talk about what it’s like to be a nurse in today’s healthcare environment

Helping others do their jobs

The new human resources manager at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home says that by doing her job she can help the nurses and other staff members do their jobs.

Jill Mendoza said she is proud to be able to help the 115 Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses, Certified Nurses Assistants, and food service and activities personnel who make up the staff of Ellen Sagar.

“Their jobs are hard,” Mendoza said Monday morning. “I can help them so they can concentrate on doing their jobs.”

A Spartanburg native who graduated from Spartanburg High School and is currently working towards her degree in business management at Spartanburg Community College, Mendoza brings more than 20 years of experience in both the retail and health care industries to her new position. Mendoza’s career includes a total of 16 years in accounting with Walmart including the accounting office of its Greer Neighborhood Market in Greer where she still works on the weekends. She also spent 4 1/2 years as human resources manager at Rosecrest Retirement Community and three months as business and human resources manager at Summit Hill Retirement Center.

On June 4, Mendoza became human resources manager at Ellen Sagar. While she has spent most of her career in accounting, Mendoza said she most enjoys working in health care. She said she sees her job as helping the staff who care for the residents do their jobs.

“I love working with people, being able to assist and help the employees,” Mendoza said. “I know accounting in retail and human resources in health care are different, but I just feel comfortable in health care.”

Greenville News Editorial: Proceed with medical school expansion

South Carolina is a relatively poor state with a serious shortage of doctors that is only going to become more severe as the state’s population ages. This state needs more doctors, and a plan for the state to educate more of them should be applauded from the mountains to the coast.

McLeod Health gives $100,000 to Florence-Darlington Tech nursing program

McLeod Health contributed $100,000 to Florence-Darlington Technical College on Wednesday to help maintain and expand its nursing program.
This marks the seventh consecutive year McLeod has provided support directly to the nursing program at Florence-Darlington Tech.

Florence-Darlington Tech officials said the donation couldn’t have come at a better time as state appropriations for the school’s nursing program are half of what they were 10 years ago. And in 10 years, the school’s nursing program has doubled in size, making it especially important to have continued support from the community.
