CampusRN/Hodes Survey Reveals Top Drivers For RNs When Choosing Employer, Career Path
Wednesday, May 20, 2009
Bernard Hodes Group, a leading provider of integrated talent solutions, and CampusRN, a leading job board and careers web site dedicated to health care students, today announced the results of a survey of college students pursuing degrees in nursing.
The survey reveals students’ top drivers for choosing a career in health care as well as reasons for choosing an employer. The information assists employers with understanding how to better adapt their recruiting approach when reaching out to candidates.
“Careers in health care are still pursued by those whose main motivation is to help others and to work in an industry where compassion towards others is important,” said Karen Hart, senior vice president, Bernard Hodes Group. “For employers concerned about losing staff due to retirement and attrition, the good news is that an overwhelming number of those surveyed would choose their career all over again if given the chance. So employers can conclude that new entrants into the workforce are dedicated to staying.”
The online survey was conducted among 661 full- and part-time undergraduate nursing students. Some survey insights included:
- Seventy-eight percent of those surveyed chose a career in health care out of a desire to help others.
- The majority of those surveyed (98 percent) would choose a career in health care again if given the opportunity to do so.
- When choosing an employer, most students (54 percent) consider salary as the top attribute, while hours and scheduling, benefits, and management quality (all at 45 percent), and tuition reimbursement (41 percent) round out the top five attributes.
- Online job sources are still the most popular career sources, with 83 percent mentioning their use when searching employers. Half (51 percent) still prefer career fairs.
- With the majority of those surveyed (84 percent) spending part of their time on social networking sites, health care employers may want to consider establishing a presence on these sites to reach potential candidates with recruitment messages.
