Health care, manufacturing and the transportation industry all want to fill spots. But with who? There’s a skilled worker shortage and a group out of EIU is trying to figure why.
The group did a study that found there’s a lack of nurses, machine operators, truck drivers, and more. Now researchers will talk to area businesses to find ways to turn it around. Some educators say it might help to let high school kids know there is a lot of opportunity out there.
“If we can work with the high schools through junior college through college, to make sure everyone knows this is what you can do,” says Jeanne Dau, who worked on the study. “We maybe need to visit areas of business so they can say, ‘Oh I can see working here when I graduate.’’
