Want to be a doctor

Hi, my name is Mayela Garcia and I’m planning on graduating as a junior. I
am 35 of 130 out of class of ‘09. Ever since I was young I wanted to become
a doctor. I know that I would take many years but I am very dedicated. I
really want to be a doctor to help out my family. My father has really
worked hard ever since he came here to the United States. I really just want
to pay hlim back for all that he did for me. I feel that I have the
potential to be what i want to be.

More Than A Career

Being a nurse is more than helping people get better when they fall ill or
having a secure job for the rest of your life. A nurse is there to make sure
that their patients are comfortable with their new surroundings and to teach
the client to care for themselves when they leave. That is why nurses have
become the most trusted profession. I would like the join that legacy of
greatness.
I choose to become a nurse so that I can be able to work closely with those
that need a little extra help. I enjoy learning about the different parts of
the body, along with their functions and reactions to different things. To
be a nurse you have to want to do more than help people, yu have to have a
passion for science and technology, have good critical thinking skills, and
be able to follow someone else’s orders even if you do not agree.
After I receive my BSN I plan to specialize in urology. However, I plan on
continuing on my education and recieving a MSN, and possible become a family
nurse practioner.
I am qualified to recieve this scholarship because I have worked
exceptionally hard to get into nursing school. When I started my collegiate
career I was surprised at how complicated it was. My first year I started of
at a community college, and things were not so easy. I started off with a
gpa of 2.77, and by the end of my second year I was having 4.0 semesters. So
I know from personal experience that hard work pays off. That is why I know
that if I get this scholarship you will not regret it.

Serve the public

I am a sophomore student at Texas A&M;University majoring in Allied Health.
I really enjoy my major and look forward everyday to when I will officially
be a nurse and be able to serve the public. The cost of tuition and many
other things is a great burden to my family since they are paying for all of
my school and it would be such a great help to get this distinguished
scholarship so that it might ease the cost of school to my family and
myself. Some of my future goals include upon graduation from Texas A&M;is to
go to Texas A&M;College of Nursing (which has been newly opened) where I
would like to train to become a nurse practitioner. I also hope to be able
to specialize in gynecology. Becoming a nurse is something that I have
looked forward to all of my life, and being awarded this generous
scholarship would be greatly appreciated and help pay for many things that I
need to be be able to receive the best college education.

DNP

I am currently working as nursing faculty in Mckinney Tx. I would like to
continue on toward a DNP which would enable me to work as a clinical nurse
specialist as well as continue to teach nursing students. While I love
teaching, I see a disparity in the care for many eldery clients. Frequently
their caregivers do not fully recognize the difference between the adult
patient and the geriatric patient. I would like to be able to work as a
clinician to see the geriatric client in both the acute care setting and the
home or nursing home setting.
With a doctor of nursing practice, I will be able to sit for the CNS
accreditation exam.

The Goals and Aspirations in me

As I start to think about how I am going to pay for school, I realize that
my goals are far fetched. A goal that I really want to accomplish is to live
without debt. So I started applying for as many scholarships as I could
find, praying that I would be able to pay for school somehow. As I prepare
to move to Arizona, I look for more scholarships and a place that I can work
while in school.

After I graduate college I hope to live in a small apartment and work as
hard as I can, until I finish paying off my student loans. I plan to save up
as much as I can and not take my time paying off any debt I acquire. Its
important to me to not feel like I owe people money.

I hope to graduate and become a great nurse. As my mom, dad, and stepmom
are nurses I aspire to become as great as they are. They tell me how great
their jobs are, how much they love the people they work with and the
paitents they help. I want to grow up to be like them!

Nursing To Me

I believe that i’ve grownup with nursing in my blood. My mother was still
in LVN school when she first found out she was pregnant with me. I do not
quite remeber all the details of being able to go to classes with her, but i
do remember some. My mom would take me to some of her courses and i remember
asking her “what’s this?” or “what is that?” and her telling me to be
quite so she could listen to the professor. I still have a memory of her
standing with all the other nursing students on the day she graduated. After
graduation, i got to wear the nursing cap. That was probably one of the best
days of my childhood. I thought i was a nurse. Ever since then i tried my
hardest to take care of my sick stuffed animals and baby dolls. As the years
passed i grew more and more curious of what my mothers job was really about.
In 2006, i took the first step, I earned my CNA license. ever since i have
been working at nursing facilities trying to get closer to my dream of
becoming a nurse. In the fall semester of 2009 i will finally be given my
opportunity to train as a nurse and one day be able to call myself a RN. I
hope you grant me this schoalship so i can continue pursing my dream.

Nursing for life

My nursing career started in 1984 with enrollment in an LVN program at
Panola College. Ater working for over 15 years in a small rural hospital and
raising a family I began to slowly pursue my ADN. Finally in 2004, I
graduated and began my career as a registered nurse. I have worked in many
areas in my nursing career including med/surg, surgery, endoscopy and
critical care .
My goal now is to obtain my BSN and eventually my FNP. I would like to
serve the rural community I live in some capacity. Through the years of my
progression toward my ultimate goal I have taken pride in the fact that I
have “worked my way through school”. I ahve also maintained good grades
and a good work ethic.
As I work toward a higher degree, I could certainly use some help. I would
appreciate being considered for this scholarship.

My Future

“This is a death center,” I heard my brother scream. There was blood
flying everywhere and other nurses came running from every direction trying
to restrain my brother. The nurse was only trying to get a blood sample from
his arm. I would blame this scenario on my little brother; however, the
nurse was not very nice. It seemed like the older my brother and I got, the
more her kindness faded away. She did not wear that friendly smile I
remembered. So, I decided I was going to be a nurse. Except, I was going to
be the smile a kid remembers and sees 15 years from now. I want to be the
nurse that is still smiling after a twelve-hour shift. I want to be the
nurse who serves three generations of the same family. I want to set new
standards for nurses.
There are many reasons why I should be considered for this scholarship. I
believe in inspiring others. I would like to be someone else’s faith one
day. I believe I have the Communication skills that it takes to become a
very influential and effective nurse. I am already aware of medical
terminology and familiar with the hospital setting. I have many nurses in my
family and my cheerleading coach is a registered nurse. She teaches the
Health Science Technology program at my school. I am her aide during this
class so I learn a lot. I also completed two years of this program. I
rotated through many different departments like the Emergency room and
pediatrics. I am familiar with the importance of controlling nonverbal
behavior and having relationship skills when dealing with patients, other
nurses, doctors, and hospital administration. Nursing will be emotional. It
will test my patience and try my heart.
I plan to attend Stephen F. Austin State University. I am enrolled in the
Pre-Nursing program. I want contribute my qualities to the school and make
it better in any way possible. Dealing with my grandmother’s cancer and her
death has forced me to grow up faster and realize the harsh realities of
life. I am serious about my education and know what it takes. Also, being
the captain of my Varsity Cheerleading squad has shown me how important it
is to take pride in what I do in life and to do whatever it takes.
