Making a Difference

My goals and aspirations as they relate to my education, career, and future and simple but profound:  Make a difference in the lives of those that I touch.  This has been a personal statement of mine for the past ten years of my life, but looking back into childhood it is who I have always been.  I was always the first one to greet the new student, lend a helping hand, or stand up for what I believed was right.
This goal doesnâ?Tt have to make sweeping changes; it is just a way to live my life and create small waves along the way.
In school, it keeps me focused on the task at hand, which is learning as much as I can to make a great nurse.  I do my best on my school, lab, and clinical work, while making connections with the people around me.  I am someone who my classmates trust and look to for support.  I am always willing to take a challenging patient at the clinical sight, and find out what I can do to help.
In my career and future my goal to make a difference is multifaceted.  As a nurse I know that I will make an exceptional addition to any team.  I will be able to step up to what is given me and make the most of it.  In the diverse world that we live in I can make a difference by using the languages and cultural adaptations that I have learned from living abroad several times.
I am a qualified candidate for this scholarship because I am determined to keep going no matter what it takes.  I will use my degree for the benefit of all those around me â?” my family, my community, and my employer.

Infectious Disease Nurse Practitioner

I am currently enrolled in an accelerated master’s program on the
infectious disease adult nurse practitioner (ID-ANP) track. I chose this
area because I feel passionately about the disparity of healthcare in
underserved areas, and it has been shown that infectious diseases
disproportionately affect those with lower socioeconomic status (due to
reasons such as lack of quality healthcare and early education, as well as
the overall effects of poverty). As an ID-ANP, I expect to gain the tools
needed to help combat these issues and make lasting impacts that result in
healthier communities. I am currently involved in an effort to start a
free/reduced fee health clinic in Seattle’s Rainier Valley (an urban,
underserved neighborhood), and hope that my nursing education will allow me
the opportunity to make greater contributions to this effort, including
eventually working there full-time.

This scholarship would greatly help with the costs associated with this
program. The RN portion of the accelerated program is not subsidized and
carries a tuition of nearly $40,000 for the first 5 quarters, then graduate
tuition for the remaining ~2 years. I am fully supporting myself
financially, and keeping up with the rigorous workload and clinical schedule
does not allow much time for a job. Also, due to the economic downturn, the
amount of financial aid available from the University of Washington is very
tight. Thus, I am paying for school purely through loans, and any assistance
I can get to repay these and existing loans from undergraduate school would
be very valuable.

striving for my BSN

I am finishing up my pre-requisites in Tacoma Washington right now and will
transfer to either University of Nevada Reno or to the University of Nevada
Reno by fall 2009, with my Associates in Pre -Nursing Transfer degree. Once
I obtain my BSN I plan to work for a year or so with my mother in one of the
ER’s in Reno. After I get the experience I need, I plan to become a
traveling nurse. I think it would be a great experience and well-rounding.
Eventually I plan to go back to school to become an anesthesiologist or a
nurse anesthetist. I would love to minor in Spanish, however, after
aimlessly studying for the past five years, I feel I need to concentrate on
Nursing and obtaining my degree. If one day I do become fluent in spanish, I
would enjoy traveling to Spanish speaking countries to put my healthcare
skills to use across the world.

I feel that I am a qualified candidate for the scholarship because I have
dedicated myself to obtaining a nursing degree for the past few years. Im
sure you know it is not an easy fight. I am a determined young woman who has
her mind sent on what she wants. I have been working in the hospital for the
past two years as a CNA in the Same Day Surgery unit. While there, I have
learned a lot about the aspects of nursing and I have felt the feeling you
get when you have made a difference in someones life. That is a feeling I
enjoy and wish to continue to feel through out my career.
